Your guide to coloring hair at home
There are several types of hair color, and which you should choose depends on what you want to achieve.
Permanent hair color
Penetrates the hair strand and gives lasting color change. Covers gray hair 100% and lasts until the hair grows out. Best for those who want a clear color change or full gray coverage.
Toning
Sits on top of the hair strand and gradually washes out after 6–8 washes. Ammonia-free and gentle. Perfect for refreshing color, neutralizing unwanted tones or trying a new shade without commitment.
Gloss wash (minicolor)
A middle ground between toning and permanent color. Gives a light color refresh with extreme shine, and lasts longer than regular toning.
Bleaching
Removes pigment from the hair to make it lighter. Necessary if you want to go more than 2 shades lighter than your natural color.

Choosing the right shade is the most important thing for a natural and flattering result. Here's what you need to know:
Understand the color number
Hair colors use a number system where the first digit indicates lightness (1 = black, 10 = lightest blonde). The digit after the dot indicates undertone. For example, 7.3 means a medium blonde with a golden undertone.
Match your undertone
Warm skin tones (golden, peach) work best with warm hair colors (golden, copper). Cool skin tones (pink, blue) work with cool shades (ash, beige). Neutral skin tones can use either.
Start conservative
Choose a shade that is at most 2 tones lighter or darker than your natural color for your first coloring. It's easier to adjust further than to fix a change that's too dramatic.
Think about gray hair
If you have over 50% gray hair, the result will often be slightly lighter than the color chart shows. Choose a shade slightly darker than your desired end result.

With the right preparation and technique, you can easily color your hair at home with salon-quality results. Here are the 5 most important steps:
1. Prep your hair
Don't wash your hair the same day – natural oils protect the scalp. Have an old towel, clips and a comb ready. Apply a thick cream along the hairline to avoid stains on skin.
2. Mix the color
Follow the instructions carefully and mix color and developer in the correct ratio. Always wear gloves.
3. Apply the color
Section the hair and apply evenly from root to tip. For re-coloring: start with the regrowth and pull through the lengths the last 10 minutes.
4. Let the color develop
Follow the recommended development time – don't leave the color on longer than recommended. Set a timer.
5. Rinse and care
Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water until the water runs clear. Use the included conditioner or a color-preserving treatment.

Frequently asked questions
Can you colour your hair at home?
Yes, absolutely! Over 12,000 customers have already coloured their hair at home with our products and got salon-quality results. The key is the right colour for your hair and good guidance. Take our free consultation and we'll help you find the perfect colour.
Which hair colour is gentlest on the hair?
Toning is the gentlest option – it sits on top of the hair strand without opening the cuticle, and gradually washes out after 6–8 washes. Permanent hair color penetrates the hair strand and lasts longer, but contains ammonia. Bleaching is the most demanding because it removes pigment.
Our products contain caring ingredients that protect the hair during coloring. See our toners for the gentlest option.
Which hair colour covers grey hair best?
Permanent hair colour gives the best grey coverage — up to 100%. The colour penetrates the hair strand and covers grey hairs completely with a long-lasting result.
Toner can camouflage the first grey hairs, but doesn't give full coverage. For best results we recommend our dedicated grey-hair collection.
What's the difference between permanent colour, toner and gloss?
Permanent hair color penetrates the hair strand, gives lasting color change and covers gray hair 100%. Ideal for those who want a new color or full gray coverage.
Toning sits on top of the hair strand, lasts 6–8 washes and is ammonia-free. Perfect for refreshing color or neutralizing unwanted tones.
Gloss wash (minicolor) gives a light color refresh with extra shine. Lasts longer than toning, but gentler than permanent color.
Not sure what suits you? Take our free consultation and we'll recommend the right product.
Which hair colour makes you look younger?
Warm, natural tones that are 1–2 shades lighter than your natural colour give a youthful result. Avoid overly dark colours as they can highlight lines in the face.
Highlights add dimension and a natural, youthful look. Combined with the right base colour, highlights can work wonders. See our highlight kits for a natural lift.
What do I need to colour my hair at home?
Everything you need is included in our colour kits: colour, developer, gloves and instructions. We also recommend having on hand:
Before colouring: An old towel, clips to section the hair, and a comb.
After colouring: Colour-protecting sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner (optional but recommended).
We offer complete kits tailored to your needs. See all our hair colours and find the right one for you.
How long should the hair colour develop?
Development time depends on the type of treatment. Permanent hair color should normally sit for 30–45 minutes after application — always follow the instructions that come with the product. For toning the development time is shorter, usually 15–20 minutes. Gloss wash only needs 5–10 minutes.
Important: longer development time does not give better results — on the contrary, it can lead to dryness and uneven color. Set a timer and rinse when time is up.
