Frequently Asked Questions at By Bente – Find answers to your hair coloring questions. Our FAQ page covers various questions that come up around coloring hair at home.

There are big differences between hair dyes. Cheap dyes can contain ingredients that are a bit harsh on the scalp. Freshly washed hair is not recommended if you often experience itching after dyeing, the oil layer on the scalp is then gone and the scalp is therefore more sensitive. Ammonia-free hair dye is usually better for the scalp.

The challenge with bleaching and dry shampoo is heat. Dry shampoo itself can't handle high heat on top. My hair has broken when using a straightener on top of dry shampoo🙈 When it comes to highlights, you can do it if your hair doesn't get any heat, don't sit out in the sun. And if you're going to bleach the regrowth and wrap it in a plastic cap, you'll get heat from your scalp. So if you want to be on the safe side, I wouldn't use dry shampoo in your hair if it's going to be lightened.

You can work much more precisely when using a brush, then you only apply color where it is needed. more control over the treatment. That's why we only sell this in our online store. The brush we have is pointed at the end so you can easily divide the hair yourself.

I wouldn't recommend it. Hair quality is weakened by a permanent, bleaching or light coloring is a slightly harsher treatment and if the hair quality is poor we are afraid that your hair will not withstand it and break. If you want to change the color, a gloss wash or toner is much more gentle. But in any case, you should always wait 48 hours before washing or tinting your hair.

Lengths and ends are more porous and therefore absorb more cold pigments. Porous, dry hair always attracts more cold pigments, while the base, which has a better hair quality, will always attract less cold pigments. Therefore, we recommend a toner or color conditioner, which you can apply where you need neutralization, rather than a shampoo that you use on your entire hair.

Yes, you can, but hormones in the body can make your scalp more sensitive.

Then you should neutralize the yellow color, the complementary color of yellow is purple, so it is purple that neutralizes the yellow. If the hair has become yellow/orange, you neutralize it with purple and blue.

If the hair is light and has turned purple, it is easy to remove. You then apply a light cleanser to the hair. A light cleanser is mixed as follows: 1 part bleaching powder, 1 part shampoo and one part boiling hot water. This is mixed together, applied to the purple part in dry hair, working time 1-10 minutes. Lightens quickly so check often.

When you bleach your hair, you remove the pigments inside the hair. Hair is made up of the primary colors, Red, Yellow and Blue. The blue pigment disappears first, then red, orange and finally yellow. The hair contains yellow pigments until the hair is chalk white. Therefore, we recommend using a toner after bleaching, this neutralizes the golden that is left in the hair and the hair will get a more natural light color.

The typical light Scandinavian hair is usually a little thinner and finer. It also doesn't withstand as much. The hair is exposed to wear and tear every single day from weather, wind, sun, hair ties, blow dryers, strong shampoos, etc. Store shampoos are often stronger than hairdresser shampoos, mild shampoos that provide moisture and strength are good. A leave-in conditioner can work wonders over time. This protects the hair between each wash and provides extra nourishment to the hair. They also often protect against heat. If you treat your hair, you should only treat the regrowth when it comes, then all the hair will only be colored once rather than every time. With good products, leave-in conditioners and only coloring the regrowth, you are on the right track.

Good question and I understand that at times it can be a bit much information. But in short, it is the hydrogen, i.e. H2O2, that determines how much the hair will lighten. The higher the hydrogen, the more it will lighten. The H2O2 that we sell ranges from 1.5% to 12%, where 12% lightens the most and should only be used on dark, frizzy hair.

Yes, all chemicals applied to the hair will damage it a little, but some more than others. Bleaching damages the most, while toner damages the least. The bleach we sell contains a little care that makes it a little less damaging, but it will still weaken the hair a little. We never recommend bleaching weakened hair. We never want customers to risk losing their hair, or breaking it.

The hair dye needs oxygen to work, and the mixing bowl only allows limited oxygen in as the consistency is thick. The working time is calculated after all the dye is in the hair.

If the color is already mixed, unfortunately you can't save it. But if you only mix half, you can screw the cap on and use it next time. It can last from 6-12 months even if it is opened.

We have developed our own protective oil that you can apply to your skin, it's called Skin and it works fantastically.

Lengths and ends are usually more porous/weakened, and therefore absorb more color. You can wait to remove the color from the ends, only in the last few minutes, or you can choose a lighter color for the ends and therefore achieve a more even color on the hair.

Some hair dyes can be harmful if they are strong, but our hair dyes are ammonia-free and contain care. It is the strength of the h2o2 that determines whether the color becomes stronger. It is also important to note that if you are allergic to hair dye, this can cause a serious reaction. We therefore always recommend taking an allergy test if you have never dyed your hair before, or if you have had a tendency to react in the past.

The first number is the depth or darkness of the color. The numbers after the dot indicate which reflexes it contains, such as red, purple, blue, etc.

There are hair dyes with and without ammonia. Our dyes do not contain ammonia. In order for a hair dye to be effective, a color cream must always be mixed with hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is available in several different strengths. Which strength you should use depends on the treatment you are going to do and the quality of your hair.

Color that only contains natural color, i.e. a color that only has a number, without any number after the period. A permanent hair color will always provide better coverage than a minicolor or gloss wash.

If you use a permanent hair color or a lightening color, your hair will never return to your natural hair color. With a minicolor, gloss wash or toning, this will gradually disappear from your hair.

The working time varies depending on the supplier and type of paint used, but is usually around 30 minutes.

Yes, it can. Our colors have a shelf life of 5 years from the date on the tube. An opened color tube with the cap on has a shelf life of 6 months.

There are various ways to remove artificial pigment, but the most gentle and effective is bleaching. However, it is important to remember that the hair will never be able to return to its natural hair color with such a treatment.

You should not use strong hair dyes to dye your eyebrows, as they are so close to your eyes. Our hair dyes can be used at 3% and full working time if you wish to use them.

If it is hair color from the same brand and the same h2o2, it can absolutely be mixed. Our hair colors are designed to be mixed, so that you can achieve the perfect combination for your hair and your desire.

If your hair color has become too dark, it can be challenging to lighten it again. The drier your hair was before starting, the more pigment the hair absorbs. This is often the reason why the color can become too dark. Otherwise, it is important to remember that hair colors bought in stores are almost never adapted to Scandinavian hair. Scandinavian hair is much thinner and finer, and therefore needs less pigment. Therefore, hair color bought in stores can be perceived as too dark.

This is possible as long as the hair has not been previously dyed darker. The higher the strength of the h2o2 hydrogen peroxide, the more lightening will be achieved. The hair close to the scalp will always lighten more and better than the lengths and ends, due to the heat from the scalp.

What is hair bleaching?

Bleaching extracts the pigments from the hair, making it lighter. But you should always remember that it is the golden pigments that come out when you work with bleaching. You can read more about color theory here: https://bybente.com/pages/slik-mestrer-du-harfarge-hjemme

Bleaching with 12% h2o2 is the strongest you can expose your hair to. The weaker and milder bleach you use, the less damaging it is to the hair. Our bleaching does not contain ammonia, and contains care that makes it more gentle on both hair and scalp. You should be careful about bleaching already weakened hair. Hair can break if it is not of good enough quality based on the strength of the bleaching.

We always recommend starting such a process with bleaching as this is the most gentle on the hair. You can also use a weaker bleach afterwards, as the hair shaft has already been opened. We use bleaching as hairdressers use, as this is the most gentle way to remove unwanted, artificial pigment. If you have natural hair, we recommend bleaching or lightening to achieve lighter hair.

Hair will always become warm in color when bleached. There is no form of neutralization in a bleaching process, so this must be used afterwards. If you bleach dark hair, it will go from red to red-orange, then orange, yellow-orange, yellow and finally light yellow. The hair will contain golden pigments all the way to white. However, bleached hair can always be neutralized with a toning or other similar color treatments.

It is best for your hair to only strip the new growth as it appears, rather than stripping on top of already-striped hair. 3-5cm would therefore be ideal for getting an even and best possible result.

Toning is a color that gradually disappears from the hair.

How long the tint stays in the hair depends on many factors. What the hair quality was like before you started, how often the hair is washed, whether a clarifying shampoo such as silver shampoo or similar is used are all factors that affect how long a tint stays in the hair.

A tint will never cover gray hair, but will help to reduce it.

The sun lightens hair in the same way as bleaching, just not as quickly. It is always the cold pigments that disappear first when the hair lightens, and thus the color is perceived as more golden.
